Over 160 House Republicans Vow To Fight & Block Potential Iran Deal
Following Biden administration's comments that it is in "the midst of the very final stages" of indirect talks with Iran toward restoring the 2015 JCPOA nuclear deal, Congressional Republicans are rallying to torpedo any potential final deal before it could take effect.
State Department spokesperson Ned Price had described that while being on the cusp of a breakthrough and with a deal in sight, the US is now in "the decisive period during which we'll be able to determine whether a mutual return to compliance with the JCPOA is in the offing, or if it's not."
But on Thursday a letter was issued by a whopping 165 GOP lawmakers demanding that any deal would have to be submitted for Congressional review, and further vowing to reject it in the scenario that Iran is not required to completely dismantle all nuclear program infrastructure.
The letter said a final deal wouldn't receive Congressional backing unless Iran is required to "fully dismantled their enrichment and reprocessing-related infrastructure capabilities," among other things including the release of off all American hostages from Iranian custody.
"If you forge an agreement with the Supreme Leader of Iran without formal Congressional approval, it will be temporary and non-binding and will meet the same fate as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA),” the letter said according to Axios.
They stressed that any deal would be "non-binding" - which means a future Republican president would reverse it, just as Trump did in 2018. Tehran, for its part, knows this is a possibility and is seeking assurances that it wouldn't be overturned by any future administration - a major hurdle that has long complicated negotiations.
The question remains, will Republicans have the votes?
Sen. @TimKaine is right — Republicans who backed Trump breaking the JCPOA (a move causing a surge in Iran's nuclear activity) "didn't have votes to overturn a diplomatic deal (in 2015) and I don't think they'd have votes to overturn a diplomatic deal now"https://t.co/tFhJM7zSkG

Republicans on the Senate had also sent a similar letter to Biden earlier this month, laying out similar threats to block any deal that ends up being too soft on the Islamic Republic, and which leaves much of their nuclear power and development infrastructure in tact. It's no secret that foreign allies of the US which desire for Vienna talks to be halted include Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Israel.
